Jelly Roll hexagons

Today I can share with you a finished quilt top. Ok. Not finished finished... I still need to trim it square and add the borders. But the main part of it is finished.

This is a jelly roll quilt from one of Pam and Nicky Linton's most recent books. It is entirely machine pieced with no y-seams and it went together like a breeze.

The fabric is a custom "jelly roll " cut by my lqs using just the blues and the creams from the range  Papillon by 3Sisters for Moda. I have more of the cream prints to add a border and then blue for the binding, though I am tempted to go and get some of the coral print instead!

I have tomorrow off work and Monday is a bank holiday here in the UK so I'm planning on getting a fair bit of sewing done, including quilting this one; at least starting the woven blocks for the sew intertwined quilt; finishing the pack mania quilt top; and starting a quilt top that a friend has asked me to make using a Count Down to Christmas jelly roll I got last year. And I really should do this month's bee block.

I'm hoping to post each evening as that way I'll be more productive because I'll want to have something to share with you.

Also, heading into new technological territory, this is my first real post using my not-so-new-anymore blackberry PlayBook!  So far so good!

I think a coral border would be nice, it won't really be a contrast, but it will be a visible frame around the quilt.
Is that the quilt you are going to make 2 of?
Your first black-berry post turned out perfectly well.

Sounds like you'll have a nice long weekend. It's great to have days to finish things up.
Hope the quilting goes to plan =D

365 Quilt Challenge 2016 [A finish]

I can't believe I've just typed that heading! When I made the block for January 1st 2016 I could not have imagined the journey this quilt would have taken me on. So make yourselves comfortable and grab a cup of tea, because this blog post may get lengthy! I'd seen the 365 Quilt Challenge on Facebook. I think every quilter on Facebook must have been aware of it. Loads of my friends had signed up and it kept popping up as a "Page you might like" thing. In the end, in November 2015, I joined the group, had a poke round. Decided it wasn't for me. One of the things that really put me off were the fabric requirements: you needed x amount of dark dark fabric, x amount of medium dark fabric, x amount of dark medium, medium, light medium, light, background.... I just couldn't get my head round those requirements. I'd looked at the mock ups on the wesbite and couldn't bring myself to pick a colour. I put it to the back of my mind. But I had obvious...

February Embroidery Along [A Finish]

I've really been enjoying my embroidery this year, after not doing very much last year. One of the challenges I set myself at the start of the year was to learn to colour tint my fabric before adding the embroidery - I love buying the pre-printed panels, but I'd like to do this myself as well. And the opportunity to learn this arose in February. Meg Hawkey of Crab Apple Hill Studio hosted a stitchalong to celebrate National Embroidery Month, and the first step was colour your fabric. I bought the pencils she advises,  the blending stumps, something called fabric extender and the pigma pen. And I gave it a go. My first attempt ended badly. Because the one thing I didn't buy was a new, clean paintbrush. So when I came to add the fabric extended, it went all bleary and muddy as, despite cleaning the paintbrush thoroughly, it obviously wasn't clean enough. It was unsalvageable so I started again, and I was so much happier with the results. The practice piece was, in...

Tula Nova [A Finish]

I can't believe it's been nearly two years since an epic day out in Huddersfield with the amazing Tula Pink. That day at Simply Solids was pretty close to the best day ever: a morning lecture by Tula where we got to see some of her quilts - and the amazing quilting by Angela Walters - and then an afternoon workshop with her starting work on the Tula Nova pattern. The centre that I made that day became a cushion, but I redid my centre and kept going with a rainbow or stars around it to create my final Tula Nova. All of the print fabrics are Tula All Stars with Pompoms and Stripes. The solids are all Kona. This was my first real time working with Tula Pink fabrics. I'd long been a fan of her patterns, but not her fabric. After this day I was a convert. We won't discuss how much Tula fabric I now have, nor how many of my current WIPs are Tula WIPs! But this was the start. The medallion is all hand pieced using English Paper Piecing. I learned about fussy cutting to...
